She was the youngest in a very poor family, married at sixteen, she knew only of hardship. Her married life was neither terribly hard nor easy, as in those days nothing ever was.
She taught her eight children well, as well as she would ever know how. She loved them unconditionally, in her very own way.
As her children grew, she aged. Her seamless skin replaced with wrinkles as time has taken its toll on her. Illnesses weakened her, beating her day by day. However, her children loved her no less. They cared for her, like she had done for them before.
After several surgeries, the last was brain haemorrhage. Doctors advised against saving her for she is old and may not endure the pain of another surgery. Sadly, the children agreed knowing that she had suffered so much but no more.
They took her home, just to wait…
The doctor said it would just be a matter of hours…
All but one child was there. He was in London, thirteen hours away. Agonising it was the wait to be back with her, more so to know that he will not be able to see her leave.
Miracles…
Miracles happen when you least expect them to. Without warning or notice, they appear.
The son booked the earliest flight back, only to arrive thirty-two hours later.
In union, her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren gathered by her bedside to pray for her.
1 hour…
2 hours…
4 hours…
8 hours…
12 hours…
16 hours…
18 hours…
20 hours…
24 hours…
28 hours…
30 hours…passed
She still waited for him.
32 hours
He came back, all were reunited again.
But they knew, it just a matter of time…
She still stayed on, even though she had not eaten nor drank anything for the last 32 hours
Then they knew, she was not just waiting for him, she was waiting for the right time.
She breathed her last breath 45 hours later, on the same date, same day and almost the same time as her late husband.
Miracles…
Even in a coma, she knew and she waited.
Against all odds, she persevered till the 17th of January 2007 at 1.20 pm at the age of 77 years old.
She was my beloved grandma...
